Teaching and Learning Instructional Procedures
This handbook should be read as a primer for Reading Champs coaches.
A typical guided reading lesson or mini-lesson plan consists of a Directed Reading Activity (DRA)—a text-based activity which develops or reviews a specific skill. DRAs are generally used to teach word recognition or comprehension. When using a DRA, it is important that the RC Reading Coach (reading teacher) use a consistent lesson format. (Refer to CSML-002)
Mini lessons should be planned for five to twenty instructional minutes, generally focusing on one concept at a time. At the end of each lesson, summarize what has been learned. If material is assigned for Independent Study (homework), be sure that the primary caregiver is aware of the assignment. At the beginning of the next session, check that work (working with the student is most effective) for accuracy.
It is important to continually review (and re-teach as necessary) materials within the planning stage for other lessons.
In this handbook we will be working with the details of planning a Reading Champs Instructional Plan.
Each of us, as participant in the American education system, needs to realize that each student is unique—that there is no such thing as a "standard" student. Then, and only then, are we able start teaching to each individual's needs, wants, and interests.
