These “teaching units” are designed to provide classroom teachers of United States History and Government with sets of lessons, which will effectively assist in teaching about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. They will provide students with the information to genuinely understand important events and concepts related to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
We believe that one of the chief tasks of public education is civic education and that to prepare students for adulthood includes preparing them to participate as constructive citizens in our constitutional democracy. Understanding the history and the meaning of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights is an integral part of civic education.
These lesson plans:
- • bear the imprint of teachers’ ideas and classroom experiences
- • carry the factual authority of university specialists
- • introduce concepts with clear and concrete examples
- • examine issues and events surrounding the history of the Constitution
- • take into account characteristics and needs of adolescent students
Students become:

- • aware of how the Constitution has an impact on their lives.
Each chapter:
- • begins with a brief overview of the basic theme
- • includes basic, accurate subject information for the teacher
- • lists the individual lessons in the chapter
Each lesson plan:
- • begins with an overview and statement of purpose
- • indicates necessary teacher preparations
- • notes sequence of instruction and suggests ways for closing the lesson
- • provides a list of key words and vocabulary teaching suggestions
- • includes materials prepared for students
- • includes exercises and activities for students and possible student responses
- • has word challenges to assist teachers in determining when students have acquired concepts
